No you can pull the lever to the side and it will move along while cutting . I was locking it off because i was plunging full depth and didnt want it snatching plus it was the first time i have used a chain morticer and there are no instructions with it . Each plunge does a 50mm mortice Great for doors as you can do the through mortices on the heads in one plunge then set the depth stop plunge to half way an pull the lever to do the haunch .
