Given the choice of those two the Axminster Reason being the construction of the frame is an important factor and the foxes twin bars don't look as strong as the Axminsters cast frame Andy ps welcome to the forum

Hi Selly, You should be aware that the Fox morticer's bush is 3/4" so isn't suitable for most replacement (better) chisels. The Clico brand (English pattern) or the Japanese versions that Axminster sell are all 13/16". So if you bought the Fox you would need to get the bush reamed out to accept these. Otherwise you are stuck with their own chisels which i don't think are very good. HTH, Gazza.

I have the Fox, and it is a good machine for the price band. I have a bored out bush and use the Jap chisels from axminster which are very good. One mod I've made is to bolt the machine to a bench and then fabricated a bracket to go from the top of the pillars to the wall, which helped a lot. The only down side to the machine is that there is no wear adjustment on the pillars/bushes, as apposed to those that use sliding dovetails, but if it gets to bad the bushes could be renewed. Never found the need for a small xy table. Most of my work is in oak etc so I do work it hard and have had no problems, just make sure you use a good middle priced chisel and keep it sharp.

I have an Axminster morticer I've had it a couple of years now. Not being at home at the moment I cant give the model number, but from memory I think it cost about £130 and has a moveable table via a turn-wheel and a holddown clamp. At the time I also got a set of metric and a set of imperial chisels, if that the right term, for the Morticer. I got it when I was setting up my new workshop, but its never been used. Any mortices I do with a router or domino, so for me it’s proved a waste of space, and its getting in the way in my overcrowed workshop so its got to go. I'm in Guildford in Surrey. If anyone wants to come and collect it, its yours for free. Sorry, I wont arrange for delivery, its collect only at weekends. PM if interested.

Hi PJ, where did you get the bored out bush from for the Fox or did you have it made up for you specially ?
I've got the same machine and was going to upgrade the chisels, didn't realise the bush was a non-standard size !
Cheers, Paul

Hi Selly I have the Axi, it's great, I like the fact that you can also swing the head 180 degs and carry out over the bench ops, such as door lock mortices, I have mine on the same bench as my scms and raised it so the base table is the same height so it doubles as a support for long lengths in the scms. regards, Rich.

Cheers, Paul Hi Paul, I bored the bush out myself, but any small engineering firm will be able to help. It's a 5 minute job. Philip
