I am not a big poster but I like to read most threads. i have to say most of the ones that seem to get banned are just daft. Most of the opposing sides are arguing over something quite minor (or just a personal point of view) and then" bang" it get stopped. I know people are sensitive to personal comments and some people overstep the line but in a couple of extra postings it all gets sorted out. The constant stopping of posting has put me off the site a little bit. While I am on my soapbox I find that it is difficult for me (a beginner) to get advice on some of the more practical stuff. I feel a bit embarrassed to say that i bought myself an expensive hammer saw spindle thing and am finding it a bit difficult to get some practical advice until I found this site. Plus i feel a bit guilty admitting this when everybody Else on other sites seems to be struggling with a B and q saw. Woodwork wise I have aspirations to make some doors and windows as well as tiny dovetail type things. The bigger stuff seems to be harder to get decent info on. I have found modernist postings brilliant on the windows for example. I have to say i feel a little inexperienced to post on this site as most people seem pro and i am not. But i like the fact that people are a little more open to views etc. I like modern furniture and old stuff but i like to get the jobs finished and will use the quickest method to get it done which seems the view of many who post. Sorry about the little rant. Hope I haven't offended anyone Owen

trust me owen we are not all pros' here. i keep banging on about it, but if you only pick things up as you go along, and are not lucky enough to get taught the skills, then even the simplest job can seem difficult. if you are too scared to post a simple question, pm me and i'll happily post it for you ;D i know enough to know i know nothing, so am happy to ask supposedly dumb questions. there is i know an old saying about keeping your mouth shut so as not to prove yourself a fool, but it is better to admit you don't know than to make expensive mistakes. wood is now so expensive and decent stuff so difficult to buy, that it is important to have a sensible idea of how to progress your work skills. my recent m/t's have been by hand, but they still need more practice for me to be happy. since at this time i am only making infrequent one off's. that is fine, but having done it by hand, if i were doing lots i would use my rat for sure. as for dt's hand work is so time consuming that it is also important to think about a better or more effective way. so do not be intimidated. no one person knows it all, and we can all learn by going back to basics. paul

Owen , You may know i bought my spindle moulder about 18 months ago and the last time i used one was in woodwork machinery at collage . I think i have nearly asked every question there is to ask about spindle moulders ;D and i still ask if i am not sure . So dont be afraid to ask questions ( especially about spindle moulders cause i like them ;D )

Corset, all the time I'm active on the forums, your posts will never be the dumbest Certain people over there are really getting on my t*ts. Lack of proper management will see that place go down in flames. Which is a shame because I owe a lot to it.

Maybe we can get a clothing range together with BANNED from UKW on them ;D Would the T-shirt be big enough for those who've been banned multiple times, though? Scrit

UKW simply take themself's far too seriously, you cant have an honest laugh as there vibe is too twee and genteel, you might upset there discussion about 87% japanned finish remaining; and a colony of larvea has taken up residence in my stone pond, I say old chap what SHOULD I do? As Jacob points out elsewhere and often enough, there purpose is more to market dvd's and mag's and trinket acessory stuff from the toolie industry, plus the mods are 2 faced and rude Do I miss it after being banned NO ;D

Certain people over there are really getting on my t*ts. I'm beginning to find it is getting a bit dull and repetitive. Some of the questions being asked are just plain stupid, like 'My disston panel saw has a 90 degree bend in it, what should I do?'. (OK , I made that last one up ;D). I don't mind if people have made an effort to search the forum but still don't quite understand so ask a seemingly 'dumb' question, gawd knows I'm not the sharpest chisel in the rack myself, but multiple threads a day asking about sharpening or the best hand plane are just silly. I also find it a tad irritating when certain mods take part in a discussion but then use their 'mod hat' when things don't go the way they want. 'Tis a shame really as the place 'kick started' my 're introduction' to woodworking and there is an awful lot of good stuff to be found there; it's just that sifting through the ever growing 'dross' makes it less worthwhile looking for it. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh..... well that's that off my chest then. ;D

I have to say i feel a little inexperienced to post on this site as most people seem pro and i am not. Don't be embarrassed. As Big-All says in his strapline "We are all still learning" (with apologies if I got that wrong, but the sentiment is very true even for pros). We started this site because of a divergence of views and with the intention that pros could help pros as well as pros could help non-pros (and sometimes vice versa, really), but without much of the heavy-handidness seen elsewhere (and I'm talking about several other fora here, none specifically). We also wanted a place where we could speak relatively freely and with few restraints. I think it has worked, although all the Mods have been on the receiving end from time to time. Sorry about the little rant. Hope I haven't offended anyone I think that most of us trades types have thick enough skins, although at times I'm not so sure about Jason...... ;D Scrit

As Big-All says in his strapline "We are all still learning" (with apologies if I got that wrong, Scrit exactly right scrit ;D ;D the reason for the gap is AL is still learning and we are all still learning so i am still learning as both an individual and part of the human race ;D

I have to say i feel a little inexperienced to post on this site as most people seem pro and i am not. Owen, just read some of my past questions and you will see that i probably have far less experience than you when it comes to w.w. It is so nice to see how much ppl are happy to freely give their experience and knowledge; so the ambivalence of 'do i ask and look stupid' or do i just 'not ask' is really a no brainer for me. So like you were as a lurker, when somebody asks a 'dumb' question, you can bet there are probably dozens of ppl out there that will be wondering just the same thing and ultimately grateful for the answer! ;D the other good thing about asking a question is that it livens the place up, just try asking whether a measuring stick is better than a tape measure for example (Gets helmet and takes cover) ps welcome also! ;D

I use cheapo's as I'm always losing or breaking them so good ones would be a waste of money. Rods? I met a few and then there's that singer chappie but, what good he'd be for measuring stuff I'm sure I don't know.
