Scrit & Alf both confirm what it's taken me some time to work out! I hadn't thought about it at all until I saw this odd snap in Chris Schwarz's bench book: cheers Jacob The old guy here is left-handed at a right handed bench isn't he? QS

QS Yes that's what I thought too. Probably posing for the photo because doing it right handed would have his back towards the camera - the bench being in a corner. Same grip - thumb on near side. cheers Jacob

This post to the Old Tools List on sharpening practices of yore popped up and I was reminded of this thread. Might be worth watching if anyone's interested, to see what comes up. Cheers, Alf

Cheers, Alf S'bit bit quiet out there; too quiet. Maybe I should introduce them to "convex bevel, single double-sided oil stone, free hand, fast n easy" sharpening? It's obviously what they need. cheers Jacob

I didn't ask, I don't have room for it.
No, it can't be a Festool, as the owners haggle readily.

Anyone is welcome to call me an old fart for wearing one if they like. Cheers, Alf Well, I guess I'm a similar old fart Alf. Here's me demonstrating the proper stance and grip of a wooden jointer plane using a handy piece of wood as a substitute. Luckily I found a large flat surface to push the wood over to simulate the requisite movements. Slainte.
