Following on from the 'which blade' thread, I realised that I haven't changed the blade speed on my Altendorf since I owned it.
What should I be aiming for in terms of RPM, and how does this relate to both blade diametre and / or blade type (ie rip v crosscut)

technically it is to do with blade diameter this is because obviously as the blade gets wider, the peripheral speed gets higher personally am not sure blade type makes any difference, although it should actually be stamped on the blade ie max speed, or revs. paul

this is because obviously as the blade gets wider, the peripheral speed gets higher Errrr.... shouldn't that read "as the blade diameter increases the peripheral speed increases for a given spindle speed"......? For saw blades the speed to aim for is a theoretical 3000 m/min surface speed (in wood. Incidentally this is the figure quoted by both Sherlock and Stephenson). I say theoretical because optimum can vary according to material. That means that with a 300mm (12in) blade you need to aim for circa 3000 rpm: R = 1000 P / pi * D Where: R = Revs/min P = Required speed in m/min D = Diameter of the saw (in mm) pi = 22/7 Therefore: R = 1000 * 3000 / (22/7) * 300 = 3181 rpm Feed speed has some bearing on it in terms of gullet size and ability to clear waste, although not really on hand-fed machines IMHO Scrit

Very interesting. I just did the calculation for the big rip saw in the pics I posted today as the guy said that it runs at 1500rpm which i thought was rather fast. According to the calc above it should be around 1200rpm so not too far off.
