If one was to get a quote for £28,000 for various machines (7 in total) all from the same dealer, what sort of discount would you expect to get?

None if it was the first time i had used them . If it was a tool dealer i had used before i would be happy if they decided to give me 15% but i wouldnt expect it .

Really depends on how the £28k was arrived at. They could well have built in a discount based on buying 7 machines already. How does the list price compare with £28k?
In many businesses cash flow is almost the most important consideration. Try bartering on payment terms. If the dealer gets the money from you before he has to pay the wholesaler/manufacturer then his business is low risk. As a new customer the vendor does not know you, your business or your payment record. Ask for the cash price and work out a deal from that.
Good luck

There may not be much movement in the price of the machines, but most companies will deal with tooling packages and accessories which can sometimes cost as much as the basic machine. Also if off loading and installation/commissioning are not included this is another area were a it can pay to haggle.

I'd have thought that on machinery ther's be a bit of haggle room. There are other areas for consideration, though. If he won't budge on money, or only a bit, why not ask about free delivery and commissioning (normally an on-cost for industrial kit uness new and even then not that often), also the possibility of some free training if required

We did get to around 10% in the end with free delivery and installation, quite happy with that.
