Just received the latest issue and was really impressed with the box competition. I really liked the runner-up from Peter Rolfe and would have chosen that as the winner myself. It's pretty ostentatious and not very practical but the workmanship is simply fantastic. What does anyone else think? Also, another interesting article from David Charlesworth about, well guess.... sharpening planes, of course! As much as I love to read his articles and have learnt one hell of a lot from his books, I would dearly love to see some actual work from the man! It really is getting a little tedious reading about yet another technique for fettling tools to one millionth of a millimetre. He quite obviously has an incredible talent but I've rarely seen much more than one or two pieces. Am I missing the point or does he show off his work elsewhere?

The lamp design is rather reminiscent of an Indian lamp my father owned many years ago (he brought it back after naval service in the Pacific/Indian Ocean in WWII) although much better made.

I can't help wondering what did the winning entry look like?
As for DC, well I think if you do the same thing for 30 years straight then it'd hard not to get a bit, erm, samey. Actually I take my hat off to him for coming up with so much to write about; wish I could. I think if he took a break from teaching and made stuff for a year or two it'd be refreshing for everyone (I'd love to see how the meticulous-ness held up in a customer-demand situation and what knock-on effect that might have on his advice), but I imagine financial considerations come into play. And in the famous woodworker world you have to be there all the time or you get forgotten amazingly quickly.
Cheers, Alf

I imagine financial considerations come into play. I am sure this is right. A lot of the top makers, even though they charge a lot for their work, seem to do a fair bit of teaching as well. Which suggests to me that, what ever end of the market you are at, making a good living from woodworking, without supplementing it in some way, is difficult. Cheers Paul

I can't help wondering what did the winning entry look like? Well, from my perspective, a pretty ordinary (but finely made) cigar style box for candles with a drawer. Don't understand judges sometimes... ... I think if he took a break from teaching and made stuff for a year or two it'd be refreshing for everyone ... Yep, have to agree. I 'd love to see some of his work although I do understand why he may not want to take the financial risk. Especially if his courses are still doing well. I don't imagine there can be that much money to be had only making bespoke furniture to his standards and I can't see him as a joiner working to deadline.

Naah But he was such a regular on another site it was like having the Kleen-e-zee man. Infact I wonder if he does door to door - a good salesman never sleeps ;D No but seriously - I'd guess he doesn't make much himself judging from "Furniture making Techniques" which doesn't actually contain much about furniture and is mostly about tools. A few interesting tips in there however, to be fair. cheers Jacob
