Hi all, I am in the process of making built in wardrobes and had planned to use Jason B method of 22MDF for the door rail and styles, but have encountered a problem. I cannot get 22mm MR MDF and will have to wait about 2 weeks for the supplier to bring in standard Medite 22mm. I can run some sycamore up to 22mm and make a frame and then glue in the 6mm MDF panel but I am concerned about some cross grain situations on some of the rails. I will be using a profile and scribe set for the construction. The bottom and middle rails will be about 6" wide (they are 6' doors) and I don't want the joints to split as they are going to be a painted finish. Any opinions? Philip

When I make cabinet doors be it kitchen cabinets of wardrobes I produce the rail and styles from 25mm MDF. So would it be possible for you to use 25mm MDF that presuming that if you’re suppler as got it in stock. Have a look at the drawing it will try to explain what difference 3mm can make. Just out of interest this is the tooling I use to make up cabinet doors.

Alan, Face frames are 22mm and the doors are going to be inset so I really am stuck with 22. Also the router cutter set I think has a max. stock thickness of 22mm.

The thickness of a door doesn’t restrict the doors being inset or overlaid.

the idiot is right you can always adjust the hinge plates to make allowence for different thicknesses. paul If using concealed hinges you don’t even after to that. Hafele & Hettich offer a suitable clip on mounting plate to suite most door thickness to go with there hinges. Concealed hinges can also be used with inset doors.

I've got a 3mm overhang of the face frame from the carcass and then a beading to apply which brings it up to 9mm, so I intend to use 9mm adjustable plates. The hinges are Blum modul insets. I know I could set the plates back 40mm and go with a 25mm door but the router cutter I think has a 22mm max depth. Really what concerns me is the width of the rails, about 6" in a cross grain situation with sycamore. The only other option if I can't get 22mm MDF soon is to go with 25 and route the frame and styles with a chamfer bit and finish the corners with mason mitres, but it seems more hassle, but probably better than going with the real wood and its issues.

If you want I will machine the parts you want in either 22 or 25mmm MR MDF all I need is the door size etc. All you pay is 2 hrs labour plus materials and delivery. Delivered flat pack ready for you to assemble in other words I wont put the doors together. If I don’t have either thickness of MDF in stock I can get next day so that parts won’t be a problem.

All the local timber merchants are now back from holidays and one has got a sheet of standard Medite 22mm, so I will go with this. Thanks anyway for the offer Alan.
