Evening all!
I have to make a pair of gates, 2m wide each and was just wondering if anyone could advise what size post would be needed to support them given that the post for one of the pair must be free-standing (i.e. no diagonal supports).
Gates will be softwood about 1500mm high and probably fully boarded to about 1250 height with T&G with some kind of open bit above that.
Not much thought gone into it yet but I'd like to get the posts in asap if I can.
Cheers

if it was me, I'd go for at least 6x6 with 1/3rd of the total post length below ground.
remember ground frosts will lift and move the posts if the water table is high - or there is poor drainage.

I would certainly agree with that, 6X6 and at least 2' into the ground. Should take the weight adequately.

Hi Scott, as Tusses said 6x6 post , 1/3 well concreted in should do well. You will need big hook and band type field hinges, preferably three per gate. Any gates that size will benefit from a sprung jockey wheel on the bottom. Cheers, Gazza.
