Multi not always best solution for a small shop as you have to have access all round, but stand alone machines can be re-arranged to suit. Depends on the space etc. Mines a mini-max lab300 with extra long table. Build and accuracy top notch. Planer excellent but 2 speeds would be handy. Saw, sliding table and outrigger all excellent, accurate, easy to fit up and demount. Spindle feeble. Function changes not the best - Maxi 26 with single motor was easier and quicker. Worst thing is arrangement of switches. Really fiddly and badly positioned. Emergency cut-offs all out of sight and not easy to knock off. Switching crap really, and badly thought out. Motor brakes all failed and impossible to adjust (not like it says in the manual!). Fences not too accurate. Service from Axminster abysmal.
Worth considering for the accuracy, at the right price (lowish).
Ebay good.

but then jason what do you mean by a multi machine. you have a spindle moulder, and have said no to a p/t so what else is there that a multi would do for you apart from take up bunches of space ;D scott and seargeant have i understand stuff, but maybe the idea is to check in exchange and mart, none of the second hand sellers are that near london. my mates at jaycee sell robland which is a good solid machine, and have a number of machines on display, so might be worth nipping in and asking. they might be able to point you toward a second hand machine too, or a recent trade in. paul

I didnt say no to a PT , in fact i said i have two of them . So a multi machine would give me a better table saw a better PT and a second spindle moulder .

Regarding the second hand route all of my machinery is second hand apart from my power tools that is. and i haven't had any problems so far touch wood The way i went about it is, i made sure on the phone, that the machinery was up & running & could be demonstrated that it was in good working order. I research on the net , asked Scrit & asked in the trade what the reputation of the machine was, i checked to see if parts could still be had & whether they where expensive or not. Also i took into account who was selling the machine, a couple of machines i bought was from a amateur who decided to become a cabinet maker for a year, so they where literary brand spanking new. so that's where bb's stuff went it's a bit wierd jason, have you found some more space in your shop to put a machine in ;D checking my axminster catalogue, the rojek etc seem to offer only max 4 functions, sawing, p/t and spindle moulder, although at least one has a sliding table which is good news, so what else do you want or need??? paul

Conventional auctions (as opposed to Ebay) can be the source of bargains, although you don't have the same kind of consumer rights that you have when buying through a dealer.
Two possible routes - one is the auctioneers who specialise in plant and machinery - often they do asset sales from companies that have closed down etc. The other is just general auctioneers. I once saw the biggest saw (ahem) I've ever seen in the flesh - an Attendorf Panel saw. Someone got it for less than £500 - probably cost as much to ship it to his workshop!
All that said, time is money for you so you may just be better off going through a dealer.

I'd go for the heaviest. Not entirely a crap idea. Keeps sound levels down AOTs. What is it that top one? I bet it's a lot cheaper than the new one. I'd dump the slot morticer though.
