laying out something else to finish i discover i have less oak than i had hoped, so i wondered whether oak and cherry go together in the same piece of furniture??? are there any rules, or can you mix and match colours as long as they are hardwoods?? i'm not talking about a few accents, but basically the top of an oak box. paul

I don't think there are rules as such. It's just about what looks pleasing to the eye. I have never seen Oak and Cherry together, my instinct is that they won't contrast enough to make it look right. I often put the timbers together and then walk around the house looking at them in different lights. Maybe even with some oil on them.
