Ok, so here's the idea. You've seen biker build off, right? Two guys build a motorbike in about two weeks it then gets shown off at a bike show. There is a secret ballot where no-one knows who built which bike. The winner gets a great big dollop of pride and its handshakes all round.
So here's how it translates to this place - Two guys go head to head with say a month to build something within some pre defined criteria for example a box, a chair, a coffee table, something from mdf, you get the idea. At the end of the month, the competitors send images, lets say no more than five, of the finished item to an independent administrator who then posts the images in a poll. Voting closes after a week and the winner gets the aforementioned dollop of pride and then it starts over again with two more people. No need to categorise to competitors just a bit of fun.
Quite happy to administrate or compete in the first one for a bit of a laugh.
Anyone else up for it?

A few interested parties then? Paul, there will be no prizes for "slow old bastards" but i don't see why the rules couldn't be adapted as long as both parties agree. rgds Stu

Sounds fun , can i put forward Jacob to build a chair out of MDF ;D Sounds like a challenge too far! I just googled 'mdf chair' but nowt showed. Is perhaps too crapiferous for chairs IYKWIM. They'd be very heavy, and have to have well rounded corners to avoid having them knocked off. Possible, but worth the effort? cheers Jacob PS I dunno though - I've seen african bowls and stuff made of dried cowshit - looks like bakelite but doesn't hold water too well ;D PPS Had more luck googling bowls made from cowdungChair made from cowdung perhaps a better bet than mdf! Anyway - I'm on the case, will report back ;D

As JFC and Tusses were the first to respond, how about you guys go first?
We need to get some sort of challenge, probably something easy to see if the whole thing works. I think that there is a bit of responsibility for those taking part to go through with it, because to not do it would be very unfair on the other competitor.
Ok, I'd suggest that you pick something from the following list that interests you both:
1) Some sort of box. 2) A frame 3) Something with a curve or bend in it
If you don't like any of those make a suggestion yourselves. If we could agree a finish date one month from now so 15th October. I will happily "administrate" or chase to make sure that you are going to finish on time, collate the photos and post the poll. Max 5 photos i would suggest for no reason other than it was the first number that came into my head.
What do you reckon?

No chance of me doing the first one. I am stacked with work and i tell my customers to f**k off chasing me so you would have no chance ;D

A polite thanks, but no thanks would have done! Fair enough, but you wait until the credit crunch hits and you'll be begging to join in with the games Ok lets move down the list to Paul - up for it Paul? rgds Stu

Are the projects with hand tools only or machines ? I reckon it's irrelevant, if we've got to judge by photo alone - plus i'd just cheat anyway ;D ;D ;D rgds Stu

sorry to confuse things, but i tend to be up late, (as the actress said to the bishop ) and also late in the morning. how about the first one being something that we are presently making as an item, rather than for a particular purpose, ie do i want to make something i won't use or pass off as a gift? however i am halfway through making a table, and also now have started the layout of a sort of hope chest with drawers both are to use up materials, and may or not meet criteria, but am happy to enter them in a contest that ends at the end of october, 2008( ;D) and see how they compare with similar things from others. so how do we move forward, and what are we going to do about prizes, or do we put some money up for charity??? paul

The original idea was that it would be two makers going against each other, and that there could be a series of competitions that could go on over a longer period of time. I think that competitions in general tend to get people excited but it's a different story actually getting people to enter. This format allowed two people to "get on with it". When they have finished two more could have a go. I wasn't anticipating having any prizes other than title of "Reigning Woodwork UK Champion" and just letting the forum decide the winner each time.
I don't see why each competition couldn't be different to allow the entrants to set it up for themselves i.e. Paul might be able to find someone to make a table (Tusses, simuk maybe?) and take it from there.
Having said all that, if the general feeling is that something else should be done I'd be up for that too.
At the end of the day it's a bit of fun and will hopefully get some projects and WIPs onto the forum which is always interesting.

How about making a shutter in a shaker style but using that special MDF that has a veneer face that looks and splits just like real panels ;D! Oh, and don't forget to make sure it's the unstable type of MDF that swells in its width to force the frame joints open just like a real panel can. ;D ;D Oh, one other thing, make sure it definitely the MDF that will twist and buckle just like a real panel can as well... Then when it's finished, make a cardboard box out of it to put it in. ;D
