First piece was a very grotty coffe table at school when I was 11. The second? I'm working on it now (since I'm four times older, it should be four times better, no?)

Shelves, loads of shelves for our place in France. The first one was in MDF from plans in a woodworking magazine. I don't use MDF any more, but French rustic is a style I can manage...

Made a small footstool at school (about 43 years ago!)
When we married, bought an old house that needed TLC, so cash was short. Did a built in cupboard for main bedroom.
Made a coffee table from 2*4 pine, un-planed Cut and assembled. Bevelled the top and bottom of the legs. Then took a blowtorch and scorched the wood, then in with a brass brush to remove the burnt soft stuff. Some walnut stain. Then a light wiping with sand paper which lightens up the growth rings. Then 2 coats matt polyurethane Looked very good. Lots of fondues with lots of cheap wine held around that table.

My first piece was an 8 foot wall unit back in 1970 something or another when I bought my first home. It included a cocktail cabinet and display cabinet all made in good old veneered chipboard. no real joints back then just dowels and glue with iron on edging. I was really proud of it at the time, looking back now I have come a long way since then but now use MDF. ;D

A table. The top was actually a board my Dad used to mix cement on, the legs were made from a packing crate and the rest was made from an old shelf. All held together with nails.
I made it when I was 6 years old! It lasted ages and ended up outside being used as a platform by our cat to jump up to the kitchen window.
That was 1960 something. My woodwork has improved a little since then, but... I today still have and use the cantilever toolbox my Dad bought me at that time! I still have the Tenon saw, junior hack and the plane he bought me too!

Funny how we hang on to those early tools. My dad made me a toolbox with a tenon saw in the lid and a couple of chisels,a block plane and pincers which I still use (circa 1956). Life has just gone full circle as I have recently inherited his as he is moving into a flat.
cheers

The first proper thing I did was teak 'fone table around 1972. I remember the sawdust stuck together in clumps when I cut the tenons...I thought the timber was wet - Rob
