Thanks to all who told me that Sketchup has a quick learning curve compared to full-on CAD packages.
My little table took around 10-20 hours of learning to use TurboCAD when I did it, just for 2D projections.
In Sketchup tonight I've got a half-decent mock-up of my workshop with the major machinery roughly laid out as it is in real life now. I am absolutely amazed by this tool and look forward to doing the design for my daughter's dressing table with it. Thanks again for the heads-up on this - I'm totally in awe at the (relative) simplicity and the power of seeing things in 3d.
Cheers
Lee

Have a look at the Design forum in the other place. It has a sticky pointing to lots of tutorials, mostly by DaveR. There is also a good set of stuff on the Fine Woodworking site, again a lot of it is by Dave.
The most important thing to learn about (after the basic drafting skills) is components. Oh yeah, and layers, particularly always drawing on Layer0, then and only then moving components to other layers as appropriate.
