Hi All, As most of you probably know, I'm making a table for the competition in the other place. You can see the drawing here www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=17065 Sorry to have to do a link but haven't worked out how to post images on here yet. I've done the top and legs and I'm about to glue up some wood for the under rails. I was going to guess at the depth to make these rails on the basis of what looks right probably is right. However, is there a formula of some sort for working out this sort of thing The top is 36" diameter and 1 5/8" thick, the legs are 3" square and the overall height is 18" (I'm too old to do metric ;D). The legs are slightly splayed. Cheers Paul

I always go with what looks right unless it's a structural specification .

There are no hard and fast rules just draw it out with Sketchup or the like; I use Turbocad.
I usually work out the perfect proportion then go out to the workshop to find I haven't got any timber the right size.
I've sketched out the table and 3 1/2 inches looks good to me.

Many thanks, Keith. I'm grateful to you for going to all that trouble. That's about the size I had in mind - but it's good to know I can blame you if it looks rubbish ;D Sketchup Blimey, I've only just mastered the back of a fag packet and a pencil ;D Cheers Paul
