Hi there, My wife and I celebrated our fifth wedding anniversary on the 14th of last month, and as the traditional material for gifts the fifth year is wood (!) and I've just switched careers from one revolving around computers to one revolving around sawing and gluing bits of wood together, I promised to make her a bedside table. It's only half done at the moment, it has an opening at the top to be used as a shelf for books, junk, and two drawers below. I haven't done the drawers yet, but plan to do them with by hand and use lapped dovetails, we'll see if I chicken out! Here it is from the front: I was worried about the proportions of the gaps, but they're growing on me. From the top: Those mortises, tenons and wedges are done by hand (although I used an auger to get most of the waste out, and then used bevel-edge chisels. The wedges are made of maple. And here it is from the back, (4mm ply insert in a routed rebate): I've spent about 20 hours making it so far and expect to spend the same again on the drawers. Started with a piece of brown oak 13" x 4" x 83" - it was a bit of a struggling getting it off the rack and to the bandsaw infeed table on my own! It must weigh over 50kg. Still most of that left though, so shouldn't work out too expensive. Boss is back from holiday from tomorrow, so it could be a while before I get the workshop to myself again to make the drawers... Thought I'd post this in half-finished state for you all to have a laugh at ;D Thanks, Craig

Nothing to laugh at matey. stain the back of the ply insert though, just gives it a sort of finished look.

Yes - I haven't finished oiling it yet, I have given all of it apart from the back one coat of oil only so far.

Craig If you have some meths, then give it a wipe with that and if you have a polish supplier near you. You can get some van dyke and it is mixed with hot water plus its cheap

If anything it will grow and shrink front to back unless I misunderstand things horribly! Craig

You could use white spirits too but if you cant get it out . Get a cloth with some meths on it ( just so it is wet and not dripping ), wipe it on the oil and light it What this will do is bring the oil to the top so you can wipe it off ( it meths vapors that burn as long as you dont have it dripping wet )
