dd, It is quite sad that you should react in the way you have as it is clear you have not "fully understood my perspective". It seems to be common that criticism is taken as a personal attack nowadays and yet that was in no way my intention and if you re-read my post it contained no offensive comments about you or your skills. In fact the only personal attacks have been against my character from you.
I was speaking in the third person. In other words, you are the expert in design and, as such an expert, you should have the confidence to try and demonstrate to the customer alternative designs that they may not have thought of.
As for your other comments I see little point in a rebuttal only to say I'm not in any way prejudiced, how can I be, I don't know you.
I was under the impression that this was a discussion forum where comments are welcomed. Otherwise we can all post "I agree" and go home happy.
A shame it should end like this as I feel you have obviously demonstrated your woodworking skills (and courage in posting your work), I merely disliked some of the design elements and hoped you might defend your reasoning in ways other than "it's what the customer wants".

telos most of the guys here are cabinet makers, professional woodworkers and theres a bunch of talanted part timers and hobbists all with a wealth of knowledge. not one of them will claim to know it all, although scrit seems to know quite a lot these guys will point you in the right diection if something isnt quite right, but they wont slate your work and neither will i because im only a carpenter, i cant even begin to compete with these guys i wasnt afraid to post my work, so you have nothing to fear

it was educational for me as well and ive learned a lot
im a carpenter and most of my work is in window/door repairs, maintenance and second fix work
this is my first foray into what i think could reasonably be termed mid range cabinet work
im dont think im good enough yet to take on real cabinet work but it will happen

hi dirty deeds, personaly i think it is a stunning piece or furniture. i agree with you that customers choice is down to them and their tastes. Its the customer paying the money so they get what they want. If it is going to look awful then we tend to point them in the right direction. Just a quick note about grain direction, we come across this problem all the time and use two solutions, one is a bead and butt or v jointed back panels, tongued and grooved, or to split the back in two with a timber strip runnng up the centre. We groove the back into it and have it just a few mill thicker than the back panel. Can also work as a extra strip for shelf supports on wide adjustable shelving.
