We have started two sticky threads on "Power tools " They are ' Tools I like' and Tools I dislike'
It applies if you have used a particular tool, not if you think it has 'bling' ;D
Would this be appropriate in hand tools or not

Seems to me that it woudl turn out like all those 'Forum Members' Toe Clippers' etc. lists on TOP. Very little light shed (but thankfully even less heat generated). If people have tools they particularly like, or dislike, a normal thread can be started. In general the fewer stickies the better, I reckon, otherwise the first screen of any forum gets clogged up too much with slow moving, and on the whole not that interesting, stuff. Sorry to shoot your idea down. Nick. Who appears to be starting to get in touch with his inner old git.

I think it could be useful, provided people use it properly and it doesn't turn into a gloatfest. Cheers Paul

Nick. Who appears to be starting to get in touch with his inner old git. Dunno - if the Forum Members' Toe Clippers had been added to properly (not just what you have, but a few words on what you like or dislike about it) then it could be handy. As it is a particular discussion about tool x or y is probably more illuminating and can digress into some interesting side streets. Cheers, Alf

Another thought, Dom. We could also use these threads to talk about tools that we would like but aren't made any more or tools which, with a bit of modification, would be so much better. With nice people like Mr Lee looking in, we might get lucky.... Cheers Paul

Yet another thought, Dom, having seen the similar power tools sticky threads in action. The main problem, as I see it, is that all the comments, whatever the tool being discussed, get mixed up in the same thread. I think this will become very unwieldly in time. Might it be better to have separate foum topics for tools we like and dislike, then a new thread could be started for each tool we want to discuss? Cheers Paul

Not convinced it could be sufficiently objective to be useful. If someone with an Acme Oojumaflip has not also used another company's Oojumaflip, somebody else's Acme Oojumaflip and a Whatsit-that-does-the same-operation, whether they like the tool or not, they can't provide any real perspective.
As an example: User A with an Anant plough, 'My fave tool - cuts grooves in a flash - easy to set up - little fettling required - nice and shiny...' User B with a Miller's Patent plough, 'My fave tool - cuts grooves in a flash - easy to set up - little fettling required - nice and shiny...' User C with a Veritas plough, 'My fave...' User D with a Record 43.. User...
Give the Record 43 user a bash with the Stanley 43, his first impression may be of a heavy, old gothic monstrosity - and depending on his application he could be right. Superficially, all of the above successfully perform the same task, and without proper A/B testing the reader would be none the wiser of each tools strengths, quirks and weaknesses. Cheers Steve

My favourite and most used hand tool is my Record 5 1/2 jack. Does almost everything in the way of planing. Hardly need anything else. Always a pleasure to use. Have smoothers; Stanley 4 1/2 and another 4 but I've never found much use for them compared to the jack, although I know what they are for in theory.
cheers Jacob

I voted no purely because I hate sticky threads: they are the work of the devil.

Errm, doesn't the unpopularity of the idea on this topic indicate that the threads on t'other shouldn't be sticky? Or do we have to have another vote on that? Or do we need to start another Forum?

Come on Dom - decision time ;D By the way, having given this much thought, I think it would be much better to scrap the sticky idea. When we want to write about a tool we like, we can simply start a new thread and call it "Tools I like - (insert name of tool)". Simple Cheers Paul PS I have at least one tool I want to write about but I'm waiting for you to come to a decision - but if you keep the sticky idea, I might start a new thread anyway, so there ;D

O.k. the forum has voted no sticky for hand tools. We're keeping the one on power tools for a while, as it seems to have gained some interest and may yet work.
Thank you for all of your comments.

We! Who's We? Is Dom in danger of getting a T complex? As you insist, I will start a new vote in the Power Rangers section.

We! Who's We? Is Dom in danger of getting a T complex? Dare I say the Mods? (or some of us) It's early days and we're still trying out things, so we're open to suggestion. On the basis of suggestions already received we've banned Senior and promoted Alf to Tool Blog Goddess - until I was brought to book for the latter Only human (sometimes ;D) Scrit PS What do you think to the idea of pulling out the gist of some threads and creating a composite resoource article, as on WoodWeb?

scrit, certainly we could do with a learning centre. from basics to improving skills there are certainly things we could do with being placed in an easily accessible place. mind you alf tried to get it started with joints, and look where that has gone paul
