Normally you'd size the housing to the work of course, but the plane was the driving factor in this instance so it's not really even a proper entry at all, but fwiw. You might. I cheat! It's often faster to rebate the edge of the shelf part than it is to use a side rebate plane on the cut groove. And if you're applying a "face frame" who's to know? ;D Nice to see you back! Regards Scrit

Ah yes, but do you rebate the top or bottom surface - or maybe you do both? ;D

It's often faster to rebate the edge of the shelf part Ah, now I was wondering about that - if you rebate the male part does it still count as a simple housing or does it qualify for an additional descriptor and thus (pedantically) count as another joint? No doubt I have the answer somewhere on the bookshelf, but probably more than once and I bet they don't agree... Cheers, Alf

Ah yes, but do you rebate the top or bottom surface - or maybe you do both? ;D Generally bottom as it's easier to hide my mistakes..... A futile bump in an effort to revive this corpse before the idea is buried for evermore. I think one problem could be that whilst Jason, Jacob, myself and other trades know how to do the joints by hand - we simply don't as it is faster (and sometimes much easier) to fire up the router/compound mitre saw/spindle moulder/mortiser* and jgo in for a bit of machining....... I would like to see a few attempts at sawing stools, though - including from the pros (me too ) Scrit * = delete as (in)appropriate

Hey Scrit,
Stool as in a window sill? Got a bunch I've made by hand in CVG Douglas Fir. Most all have been painted (lucky for me) but I still have one or two awaiting the painter (my wife) to get around to it.
No proper dadoes / housing joints on the things though ;D
Really, I should throw a dado in a board so help the topics Alf has kindly taken the initiative to begin. Using a wooden dado plane, it sort of feel like cheating, though. They are quick and assured. It's only that thicknessing of the mating board that prevents me from expending the energy!
Perhaps this weekend. I've got a couple honey-dos in the shop to do. Including running a bit more window stop. Made all the harder since I sold off my Stanley 55 a couple years ago. The #93 cutter was a perfect match to the original.
Take care, Mike

yes just change it to "joint of the year" ;D I'm not as ambitious as you. Could we replace "year" by "decade" perhaps? At least then I stand a chance Scrit
