Any chance of a clear photo of the medallion on the handle - that should reveal all
Cheers

Then a banner with some latin stuff on it . "dieu et mon droit" - God and my right. Motto of the British monarch. Tsk, no Royalists here? ;D Your basic British Warren & Ted medallion with the Royal Coat of Arms - unfortunately of damn all use in identifying it. Either used by makers who didn't have their own medallion, making saws for someone else, second quality saws they didn't particularly want to put their name behind or, in later years, by most anyone 'cos they stopped caring. That one looks like the latter, but the quality could be okay - the let-in handle and skew back are a start. Is it taper ground? Cheers, Alf

Hey, spooky, you're describing my new saw it's not too bad, Taylor brothers it is, and if memory serves (the book's at home) that dates it to something like 1860-1940 or thereabouts. If that is the case, the handle seems too new, more like 50/60s. I haven't had enough time to delve more deeply though. At least it cuts well, which makes a pleasant change from most of the saws I've had from ebay which almost invariably seem to have something structural wrong with them. Please remind me not to buy saws from ebay, no matter how cheap they are...

Paul, that's not even funny. I flicked through the whole thing last night trying to find a reference to a Guinea saw and that took long enough. Didn't find anything, and more irritatingly I didn't find any reference to a Sovereign saw either, and yet I know I've got (or maybe had?) one of those and had a feeling it might be related.
If it is indeed Taylor Brothers, then we have dates of 1849-1915 (I have a nagging feeling the name may have been used by someone else after that, but if you think I'm going through that book again this week in order to find out you're so out of luck!).
Cheers, Alf

Well, I'm not sure of the dates of any of the saws, (but i'm sure they cut much better for knowing it! ;D, but i'd like to hazard a guess that the blob of paint on JFC's Guinea saw, taking into account the shade and texture, is a Dulux Mongolian, circa 1973. A version is still available at around £20 for 5 litres. Also available as 'hint of buttercup' or meadow shades' at £8 a pint! ;D
