By the sound of it, you've got access to some serious equipment and are putting it to good use in fettling some toolmongery.
However, I've got a British Stanley catalogue dated April 1977 and it shows all the bench planes have lever caps with kidney shaped holes. So that particular design feature may not be a reliable indicator of age. Of course, it's always possible that a recent lever cap has been added to an old body.

Did you mean "cap iron" or "lever cap"? If you really meant cap iron, I'm talking rubbish and I apologise. If you meant lever cap, my comment above is right (I think). I've amended my post above in case I confuse any more members!
