Has anyone here made or tried one of these? It strikes me that this could be a useful tool not to mention an interesting project (and saving about $70 / £35 in the process), especially as JFC is currently buying-up every second hand plane in the universe....... Scrit

Is it old saws that you are buying jfc? Perhaps you need a sawset like mine, I noticed those sawsets on the Gramercy link and they do look plain.

Scott,
Very delicate saw with narrow blade, more TPI than other USA saws, therefore very good for thin stuff. Very nicely hand filed, with needle files, hand set with punch. Hang slightly different from my other saws.
Best wishes, David

Had one of these kits sent to me before Christmas, but only just had chance to make it Anyway, nice kit, simple enough to do, I used a few small rasps and sandpaper, plus a few forstners and plenty of sanding. (could have done with a tad more maybe, but it's to be used, not looked at ;D Anway, a few walkthough pics if you want to comment, plus the finished article... cheers, Andy

Hi Paul, it cuts lovely, much the same as the retail version, although my handle isn't quite as slim as that one. Having looked recently at Lie Nielsen, Adria, Pax and Wenzloff versions, there are subtle differences, mostly with the pitch of the handle to the blade that sets the attack or aggresiveness of the cut slightly different to each other. The number of teeth is fine, more than the others, so the cutting is slower, but its rip and hand filed and very sharp, plus the slight taper of the blade alters the cut slightly as well, but you'd be hard pressed to spot it without trying all of them together to be honest. One thing of all the ones I looked at was that the Wenzloff and Pax saws are hand filed, but the Adria, despite being a very well made saw, is almost blunt by comparison as it has a machine filed finish. Lie Nielsen looks to be similarly machine filed only, but the one I looked at was sharper, but still not as good as the others. The Gramercy is a really nice saw, it would be a toss up between that and the Wenzloff for my favourite if I had a choice. It's satisfying to have something that you have sculpted yourself though, and I do like the feel of the one I did here, even if I do say so myself! ;D cheers, Andy
