Hi Guys Since i retired i decided to replace all my chisels with older ones. That may seem strange but the older one have much better quality steel to them and i love boxwood handles to work with . I now have complete sets of mortise chisels plus a complete set of firmer chisels, I have been looking for two chisels now for a long time to complete my bevel edge set these two are the 7/8" & the 5/8" chisels, all my sets have boxwood handle s and the tangs are round which mushroom out to the size of the brass Ferrel, anybody know where i can acquire these last two chisels from, I always check when up the local market and check three four time a week on e bay but to no avail as yet can anybody help ?

Bevel edge chisels seem to be rather less common than others on Ebay, and what there is seems to be quite popular.
Worth checking carefully, I've found. A lot are sold by people who don't know what they are talking about so quite often things are mis-named.

HI jfc
just re -checked those chisel some are bevel edged maybe the right sizes dont know yet awaiting reply from owner, then i noticed the tang necks are the wrong shape for what i want must be round necked right upto the end as it enters the carver handle then mushroom out to the size of the brass ferrule, as i said its to complete a set so then all my chisels will be the same . so jfc go right a head good luck with your bidding .

Hmmm,
I couldn't quite see what they all were... I have a bagful of chisels somewhere... I'll have a sort through to see if there are any Marples's. My faves too as it happens.
Regards.
John
PS Nope... Mostly firmers and a few home made jobbies. Just one Sorby, which will be in my chisel rack tonight!
Sorry I can't assist further HC.

i agree with colin, if that footprint is older, it will be much better than the marples, the one i found in my dad's kit keeps a nice edge. paul

oh allow an old man some room to manouvre colin i was referring to the fact that jason like many people tend to think that footprint now is rubbish, which it may or may not be, since apart from their tool bag, i don't have any of that stuff. as you have seen my one is older, so paul

hi guys right here go's ;D jfc as promised pics showing my chisels , I'm looking for two a 7/8" bevel edge and a 5/8 " bevel edge with the round necks to the tangs so i can complete my own set and solely for my use, so if any of you guys have got any lying around and in very good condition let me know i don't mind paying a reasonable cost for them. first this is one of my paring chisels showing the neck clearly. second should be the set of bevel edge chisels with spaces where the missing 5/8 and 7/8 should be third should be my set of firmer chisels and last i hope my set of paring chisels OK that should be it i hope all set have the same necks so if you can help and there in really good condition it will be appreciated. ;D ;D ;D take no notice of there condition all these still need cleaning and sharpening yet

Martin
Nice chisels!
I'm interested that you're collecting Marples from the "round neck" era which I've always understood to be the 1950s. Those who like old chisels usually want the pre-WWII ones with the square neck (like Jason's) which show they were hand forged.
I've sold off a lot of chisels and these days, I've only got a very limited range. Most are pre-WWII, but I've got one bevelled edge Marples with a round neck. It's a 1.25 inch and I probably use it more than all the others put together. As much as anything it's the big, beefy box handle I like. Keep hunting - you'll find the ones you want eventually. Good luck.
Regards.

I have been lucky to have picked up some old one like that ( got one a few years ago that had not been used ;D ) Most of mine are like yours HD and I have found they are much better that most of the newer chisels that I have used. I do have three newer Sorby's and one old I Sorby that I got for a £0.50 ;D I will also keep an eye out for the chisels you are after. Regards Colin
