Hi All hello evergreen I've always associated my style of chisel from around that period 1935- 50 ish but I don't know of any written evidence to say that true it would be nice to see something that could verify it , It's the quality of steel in them that i like and of course the carver handle i found the earlier chisels from the turn of the century it depends on who did the tempering if they would keep a sharp edge or not. Hi Colin you are indeed lucky man to have found them unused i usually turn up when they just been sold or a friend will tell me someone else has just acquired them , that my sort of luck , been looking nearly 18 months now just for these two , O well back to ebay tomorrow and the market places next Wednesday and Mondays you'll know where to find me. I think that it was only Marples who made the round neck type with the carver handles as well , i sure someone will tell me if i'm wrong.

Well not bad at all HC. I keep trying for a set of paring chisels, but each time I see any on eBay, I get outbid because I just refuse to go above my limit. I guess I will have to bite the bullet and use one of the 'old tool' sites and pay a fixed price! I share your fondness for these Marples bevel-edged chisels. I had a boxed set of four as a wedding present from my wife. I do have some of their Ash handled chisels; (the round butt and shaped shoulder) but my 'passion' is for the boxwood handled chisels.) Dating from the early sixties, my chisels are made from good steel and they hold an edge well with normal use. The bigger sizes I bought from the Stanley range, so I am missing a Marples 1.25", 1.5" and 2" sizes. (I am not sure if Marples did make a 2" in this range.) My original one inch has a split handle, which somehow never repaired well, but it's usable and 'wicked-sharp'! HC, I will have a look and see if I have any repeats. (Which means more than two!) Ok? Regards John
