Today I've taken delivery of a Makita P-44046 216-piece "Complete Drill and Bit Set", which is actually a sort of early Christmas present from the missus to myself. Hmmm, that must mean she wants some shelves putting up or something Well the thing is I'm quite surprised at the value for money this set is, costing just £34.50 from Screwfix.
What the photographs don't tell you is that this set comes in a fold-away case about the same size and weight as a 12 volt drill driver. It comes with almost every drill bit (brad points, flat bits, masonry bits, twist bits and a small selection of hole saws), screwdriver bits (25 and 50mm for Pozidriv, Phillips, Torx, square drive, slotted screws, hex bits for Allen keys and both metric and AF sizes of impact drive sockets) and accessory you could want to have to do an installation, or any work in the workshop for that matter. It also has a few useful extras, including a pair of nail sets, T-handle and straight bit holders (convert bits to screwdrivers, although these are a bit plasticky), countersink bit, 3.5metre tape (useful as a backup), etc. There are even a couple of carpenter's pencils in there, although I won't really talk about the spirit level ;D.
I go through a fair number of #2 Pozi bits, and lesser quantities of PZD #3, Phillips #2, etc so whilst this doesn't cover my needs it will at least keep everything I need in one box as opposed to the 5 or 6 small cases and containers I've been hawking around. To date my experience of Makita bits (in the clear jars) has been good, so I'm hopeful it will turn out all right in use - the bits certainly seem better finished than the bargain basement Chinese bits you normally see in low-budget sets
