Looking for either of the above in reasonable condition. Thought I would ask here before looking at the usual places online.

Hi Joe, One of the problems with combination and multi planes is that they often have some of the cutters missing. Keep in mind that because of the way the blades are held on the Stanley#45, Record #405 and Stanley #55, with a bolt and wing nut arrangement, cutters from most other plough and combination planes will fit. They won't always engage with the cutter adjuster because of their length, but that's not a problem because you can set the blade depth by sight and feel. Not that cutters are easy to find, but it is sometimes possible to cobble together enough bits and pieces if you look around enough. Good luck - they are great planes Paul

Hi Joe
I would keep a look out on Ebay as there have been some bargains on there but you have to keep looking for 405's.
I have seen them go for between £35 - £90 but if you keep looking and might be lucky and that is with all the cutters.
I got one for £35 and went to pick it up myself ;D

Yes, Colin's is very nice - he even got the wooden box with his To back up what Colin says about prices, I bought my #405 for £25 (some cutters missing) from a second-hand tool shop; my #45 for £45 (two cutters missing) from an antique fair; and my #55 for £165 (complete and in mint condition except for an expertly done repair to one of the fence handles) from a second-hand tool shop. Is this a gloat ;D Cheers Paul

Which is better, a Record 405 or a Stanley 45?, I am not a collector just need one around for the odd job. I don't want to buy a whining tailed bolshi employee ;D
Regarding cutters I have a couple of sets off a Record 50C around somewhere from a previous lifetime, what tool and procedure would be best to shape these to Ovolo types?
And could one of you guys post a scale drawing thingy of your Ovolo blades please?
And lastly, thank you for taking the time to reply. I just knew someone would be along sometime ;D

Joe, if you want Ovolos then look out for a later Record 405 - it came with a couple as standard. And sell the Record 050C blades to someone who needs 'em for a 50C - it'd help fund the 405 as well as being better for your old tool karma. Incidentally, now the Brothers Gloat have set the expected prices at less than rock-bottom, I fancy your chances of getting one on here are slim. The majority of us do not find these planes at those prices. Cheers, Alf

Cheers, Alf Did someone call ;D By the way Alf ( she who gets saws and carving tools cheap ), we pay through the nose for most things, its about time a bargain came are way . There have been a few 405's on ebay go for under £50 with all the bits.

Personally, I think we should resist paying over the odds for these tools. Sharp-suited collectors, who know nothing about woodworking, are pushing up prices to make a fast buck while many woodworkers, who would use them to make beautiful furniture, can't afford them. Rant over ;D See, I wasn't really gloating. I looked around for years to find mine in good condition and at an affordable price Cheers Paul

combination planes have proven to be excellent paperweights as well as excellent planesJust filled in the bit you missed out there, Scrit. ;D Any brothers having trouble using one, by all means study this basic primer before you feel the urge to either lob it over the side of the boat, or take an angle grinder to it... Cheers, Alf

Hi all,
First post in this 'new place', after an absence from the 'other place' of several months....(sheer boredom) I eventually fell over the posts that told me WW3 had broken out there and explained why I wasn't seeing the old and familiar names anymore.....
ahem....... to the point though, I have a rather excellent 050 if that's any good to the post starter, housed in a nice PP box and complete set of 17 cutters + the extra set.
Only problem is I would like to see top dollar price....email/pm if interested.
Chris.
