Intend to extract my lathe from the rust heap and put it on a new stand. What's a good height to make it? I'd guess about 40 inches to chuck center or a bit more?. Mostly for spindles etc, too small for large diameter bowls

i think you really might want it lower than that. i would suggest nearer to your elbow height when you are standing comfortably. in this way you basically are approaching the work piece with your chisel at an initial horizontal angle. so actually around a metre might well work remember though about not wearing a watch on your left wrist cause it might get caught in the chuck or faceplate. paul

I agree, elbow height. Get SWMBO to measure you standing upright with a chisel in the hand. (I MEAN the distance from the floor to your elbow!) ;D ;D
Had to trim the legs of my stand as the previous owner was a lot taller.
Also allow for an inch of whatever to stand on while turning.
