I had a great day at Yandles today. I met up with Rob Stoakley (Woodbloke), Pete Newton (Newt) and Wanlock Dod at Rob's place and we drove together to the event. As always, the best thing about these shows is meeting up with old friends. Here's Rob (on the left) and Pete And here's Wanlock Dod (on the left) with Pete The undoubted star of the show was Phil Edwards (Philly) who was there demonstrating his beautiful, hand-made planes He was helped on the stand by Tony Sutton Martin was clearly delighted with the beautiful marking knife Rob had made for him Sharing the bench with Phil was David Charlesworth who was kept busy answering plenty of questions about planes and planing Andy King was his usual smiling self (he said this was his best side ) And here's Andy having a go with David's super-fettled Stanley Mike Hancock from Classic Hand Tools was there with some very tempting goodies on display It was nice to meet up again with Tony (Escudo) on the left, and Mike Riley It was nice to meet Frugal, pictured here with Mike Hudson from Clico Mike was demonstrating the full range of fabulous Clifton planes (I've almost got one of each now ) I even managed to get Rob to try out how well they work All in all, a great day. Yandles certainly rates as one of the best shows Cheers Paul

Paul thanks for the report and pics, especially interesting for those of us that found it was just too far to travel.
There is a show at the Warwickshire exhibition ground this next week-end which is a bit more local for me, it's free too, so I may well go to that.

Keith, Another event you might be interested in (if you don't know about it already) is the woodworking hand tools event at West Dean College on 31 May-1 June. Some excellent demonstrators there. Details on the Classic Hand Tools site (scroll down a bit) www.classichandtools.co.uk/I'll be going along...... Cheers Paul

Paul, I've just looked on the map to see where west dean college is, it's about as far from me as I can go without getting my feet wet ;D Too far for me and I seem to use hand tools less and less these days Now I have a compressor I'm just going to nail everything together ;D Keith

Now I have a compressor I'm just going to nail everything together ;D Smart move - Chippendale would probably have used one if they'd been available in his day ;D Cheers Paul

All in all, a great day. Yandles certainly rates as one of the best shows Looks like you had a good time, Paul. It's always good to meet up with friends, of course, but I wonder what else in your opinion makes Yandles 'one of the best shows'. It's a long way from here, but Alexandra Palace is so disappointing these days that I might be tempted further west one day. And Escudo lives just up the road from here and if he can make it... Dave

I wonder what else in your opinion makes Yandles 'one of the best shows'. Hi Dave, Yandles has something to suit everyone. It's basically a large woodyard so there is plenty of good quality wood - almost any type you care to mention and in all shapes and sizes from huge planks to pieces for turning and other stuff. Yandles also sell machinery. On their show days there is 15% off all wood; plenty of tools and equipment being demonstrated; quite a lot of discounts; also lots of craft stuff being demonstrated and for sale. Most people I've spoken to reckon it's becoming one of the best shows to attend - it's significantly better than the Ally Pally show which, frankly, is rather a waste of time these days. Cheers Paul

Sounds good, Paul. I agree about Alexandra Palace and I don't think I'll be going next year. Sounds like Yandles would be worth a visit, despite the long distance. Not sure about the Autumn show, but next spring could certainly be a possibility. cheers Dave
