There's only only timber yard in my area so little choice for wood and quality has been free falling for some years. Currently doing 2nd fix in a room in our loft conversion. Using 4" profiled redwood (not the real stuff) and getting fed up with the usual across the grain warp (despite the anti warp kerfs on the back). Some of the board I can use without much hassle with a quick run through the thicknesser. Others I have to deepen the kerfs on the rear and manage to get them quite flat. when fixed on the wall. Fixing with screws and plugs to cover. Any ideas to make life a bit easier (other than replacing the boards)?

If they are that bad i normally wedge them from the opposite wall and glue and screw . A long length of 4x2 and some folding wedges does the trick .

BUY GRIP FIL AND WEDGE IT ;D seriously though almost all new fix in london seems to be using gripfil. gawd knows what will happen if someone lets off a chemical disruption bomb unless you need the wood look, why not use mdf and paint it?? paul

Thanks guys. Screwing about every 2 feet. As they are going to be painted would've liked to have used MDF but it's difficult to get around these parts (in fact I should've made more effort to find or order some). Yip, been wedging with 4 x 2s and pipe clamps (expanding mode). I use construction adhesive as well which I imagine is as good as Gripfill. It's all just a pain in the proverbial. So nice to just drill, screw, plug and stand back and admire..... Thanks for all your help, I've a good bit more to do so I'll find or order MDF. RGds

Plenty of sheets lying in the shop Jason but, alas, no spindle moulder. Don't fancy trying it on the router table, cost a fortune in cutters and time but thanks for suggestion. Although I suppose I could have a very simple profile. I'll see what the crack is with buying the MDF skirting tomorrow. Rgds
