Hi all,
Today I cam accross some kind of woodworm today whilst removing some old sash windows. They were bright yellow, about 1/2" long with straight bodies. There was a lot of sticky cotton web type stuff that they were teunneling through as well as the wood which was completely wasted. Largish holes about 2-3mm. I've done some web searching but haven't come up with anything. There is also some damage in a built in cupboard under the window made with blockboard. The whole area is quite damp.
Anyone any ideas?
Cheers
Mark
PS didn't have a camera with me but will do tomorrow so will take some pictures if I come accross some more of the lilltle blighters.

You have me stumped as most larvae i know are white The whispy stuff could be wet rot spores and may have nothing to do with the larvae .

TVI - I'll have a look through those. Thanks
Ithought that it was rot at first but its deffinately the worms that are making the web like stuff. They are making little tunnels out of it on the surface of the wood a few inches at a time before burrowing back in. Its quite strong stuff. An old iron weight that was there had been glued to the remains of a pocket cover with the stuff.
I'll try get some pictures.
Cheers

The one creature that I know of which creates its own tunnels is the termite (and they are a creamy colour as opposed to white), however I don't think that termite larvae are borers, are they? I also thought that termites were still limited to southern England at this stage. Any chance of some piccys?

I reckon it's woodworm holes in 2nd photo, wet rot in 5th, and the larvae are moth/beetle or something which just happen to have taken up residence in the voids, probably without doing much harm themselves. Woodworm you'd see in freshly cut or planed wood as white maggots, or as dark brown pupae, neither ever on the surface, or as the little brown beetle itself, crawling out of the hole after hatching, or flying around the room.

or flying around the room. Due any day , they normally emerge mid May round here, perhaps they will be a bit later this year, as it has been a cold spring
