Hi everyone, new on here and this is my first post so please be gentle with me.
I have been looking for a good uk supplier of hardwear for a while now and keep drawing a blank. I could do with someone like Rockler in the state's but can't fine anyone that does them special bits. I have used them a few times but the shipping is killing me.
Would be nice to find a uk based supplier that knew what they were on about.
Any ideas!!
thanks
Andy

welcome andy, but how long is a piece of string? first point is where are you, that makes a difference. second what kinds of things are you thinking about i agree that rockler do some really good things, but other people often do similar or even better. you know of course about axminster, but also there are others out there. why not be a bit more specific and we may well be able to be more helpful paul

Paul thanks for your reply.
I am based in Rotherham S Yorks but any one in the UK would do, most places do on line ordering.
Yes I use Axminster but there are a few bits thatthey don't do that I have come unstuck with. Things like wipe on poly, runners for extending table runners I could go on.

Well Andy, for "conventional" stuff I'd suggest that you start with Woodfit in Chorley, Lancashire and Isaac Lord in High Wycombe both of whom do a mail order catalogue and are especially good for kitchen/bedroom fittings. There's also Screwfix, who do a limited range of fittings and are good for, well, screws...... If you start to want more specialised stuff, like repro brass fittings then there's Martin's Martin & Co Ltd 160, Dollman Street Birmingham B7 4RS Tel: 0121 359 2111 or H E Savill St Martins Place Scarborough YO11 2QH North Yorkshire Tel: 01723 373032 although neither s particularly mail-order oriented, so don't expect on-line ordering Edit: I should have added a new (to me supplier) of brass stuff, Brass Castings - interesting as they can copy cast - and they still make some stuff in the UK Scrit

Hafele do runners for extending tables and a lot of other hardware, you will need to open an account but Isaac Lord who Scrit suggested can get any of their products www.hafele.com/uk/Also if you are trade open a cash account with Woodfit and you will get an average of 40% off Jason

whilst that kind of hardware is useful i get the impression there are other things that rockler do that you have found hard to get here. perhaps you can let us have more data, and then the advice will be even more accurate. paul

as for the last, b&q do a nice acrylic varnish which was recommended to me by colin, who makes part of his living varnishing things so he knows, also rustins is not bad. as for the shelf supports, they look like the ones ikea use for their floating shelves, not sure whether they are available seperately. finally don't really understand the first one, but it looks interesting. paul

The full-extension wooden slides are a bit of an American thing, I think. Never used them, I'm afraid. as for the shelf supports, they look like the ones ikea use for their floating shelves, not sure whether they are available seperately. They are available separately (try Woodfit or Lords for Hafele stuff) Gel finishes are another American thing not widely available, although American firm Behlen now distribute in the UK, and they do make gel finishes Scrit

For a gel type finish try Patina made by Langlow. I think you can get it in Brewers the decorators merchants - I got mine in a painting and decorating merchants - not here I hasten to add! I've used it on several things I've made and am very happy as it is more or less idiot proof Steve

As Scrit says, Isac's do the shelf supports as well as S L Hardwoods, personally I prefer to epoxy studding into a wall rather than trusting plugs & screws. Jason
