I'm just about to make some garage doors for a mate - to replace his rotting ones. They're going to be more or less the same as what he has. I know basic door theory, but never made one and am wondering about the details. They are side hung 7' x 6'6". 3 1/2 styles 3 1/2 top rail, 7 mid 8 bottom rails. glazed top. shiplap lower which is braced on the rear. I am wondering about the bottom mortise and tenon detail. should it be haunched ? any ideas for dimensions. as it's an 8 inch rail, do I need to worry about cross grain issues ? do I make the tenons tights or do I need to let them move ? The frame will be staying. any help would be appreciated ta Rich PS - Mr Grimsdale ... any examples of a door rod you could post up ?

I normally do a haunched top rail , tenon haunch tenon mid rail and a haunched bottom rail . On older doors i have pulled apart the bottom rail has two haunches , one in the middle and one at the bottom . If you want a rod just look at the side rail of a mortice and tenon door and copy that .
