Hey Wizer,
I was thinking more of a combined effort , not fair to heap it all onto one person, plus it would be cool to see the different techniques used.
What about working through the different steps individually, for example
Rod procedure
Step 1 Pick a piece of timber that has a front straight edge , from which all the setting out is worked from.

Actually when I start this toybox I have decided to try out the rod system for the first time so I can post loads of dumb questions and people can learn from my mistakes

Well, if it was easy to do I'd gladly post the article here as a response. But it's roughly 4500 words and quite a few images too. I'm not sure I've got the time right now to go through the process of placing the images on a photo-sharing server, linking them into the text and creating an online version of the article. Maybe that's a task for the future when I've finished moving house and getting up to date with other jobs. There is one other fly in the ointment in that I recently sent my manuscript on the subject to an American publisher in the hope that they'll do another print version of it. Slainte.

i don't know richard, any excuse ;D ;D hope your move does not cause you too many problems all the best paul I know, I know. All the excuses for not immediately posting an online version of the article are really quite pathetic aren't they? The house move? Well, it's almost complete. We bought a house here in Leeds using someone elses money-- I guess they'll want us to pay it back sometime. We've been moving almost by a process of osmosis because we rented a house when we first moved to the city, and Yorkshire was a foreign country to me. When we got the keys to the new house we still had to give two months notice at the rented place. This means every car journey to the new place means a car load always goes with us. I'd say about ten car loads will do it, plus the hire of a 'van and man' for one load of stuff too big for me to manage on my own. Luckily, like all furniture makers I drive an estate car. Slainte.

I wasn't thinking along the lines of you putting in as much effort as all that. Scan the actual magazine and convert into PDF would be far simpler. Anyway, it's obviously up to you, thanks for considering it though

I have the original articles in F&C which I would be happy to scan and place somewhere with your permission Richard - don't know how it will sit with F&C though?

Maybe the articles could just be attached to this forum somehow, to be downloaded by whomever looks at this thread? Or just let a file hosting server like www.hyperupload.com/ host the file so that nobody here gets in trouble. I'm sure F&C wouldn't like to see entire issues available for download but if it is only an article or two.. that's no different than the review articles available to DL from a number of manufacturers and probably (nearly!) falls under "fair use".

Anyway, it's obviously up to you, thanks for considering it though Sadly telos, I'm pretty sure I don't have a copy of the magazine with my scribblings on that topic. I don't really keep copies of magazine versions of articles-- once I've been paid for it I generally lose interest pretty quickly. I only have my original manuscript and all the images as low resolution JPEGS so I'd really have to do some work. I don't even have the original drawings, but I do still have the negatives and photographs -- and yes, I still use a film camera even now, but I do also use digital cameras, but I still prefer film. Maybe sainty (I think it was) could follow through with the PDF version of F&C's interpretation. Slainte.

I've got all the issues of F&C so I think I'll have to have a dip into past mags and have a look at Richard's articles, I do recollect them as being very detailed. I use a rod of sorts when I do stuff but it tends to be a full size frontal elevation and a half elevation on the side. In addition I also do quite a lot of detailed A3 drawings on a 1:1 scale on the drawing board. The full size 'rod' is done on a bit of white emulsioned hardboard about 1200x700mm where one corner is 90deg for my big 'T' square to run against. When the project is finished I just paint over it ready for the next one - Rob

How about TONY from the other side ;D ;D Well I'm open to offers As I recall Tony was a bit dismissive abt rods and relies on a calculator and his little ruler. With which he also administers sharp smacks on the btm, when he's not marching around with it under his arm. cheers Jacob
