Well after being busy recently making gates, fitting doors and door frames not to mention skirtings I finally managed to get back into the workshop and build another project. This time a set of Ranch style gates. Starting with a pile of pressure treated timber I cut mortices in four stiles with the morticer. Then it was out with the trusty tennoning jig, (No not that one but this one for longer lengths of timber) After an hour or so I had all of the rails with tennons on the ends and ready for a dry fit. This was the smaller of the two gates at three foot wide and the second one is seven foot wide. Horns were added to the two hinge stiles with half lap joints. A diagonal brace was rebated into the rails and the horn and this took a while to acheive. Finally after another dry fit of both of the gates I could glue them together. Having had to dimension the timber it was necessary to re-treat the wood and I also added a colour ready for hanging. I shall be fitting them next week and of course will post pics of them in situ. Until then I have some gardening to do and a couple of glazed doors to build. Will of course keep you posted.

Ah well, It is water based and if you put enough of it on it swells the wood. ~With our weather it might just keep on growing though. LOL.

I took a break from gardening today and went out in the glorious sunshine to get the gates fitted at long last. ;D I suppose it is now back to the gardening then.
