Hi everybody
I'm looking to get a book made from wood. Unfortunately I don't have skills, workshop or room to attempt making it myself. If you know anyone that would be interested in taking on a project like this, please contact me. I live in London, but have a motorbike and would be willing to travel if someone could make the book for me.
I'm not very rich, but I would be willing to compensate for beutifull work..
Thanks Gunnar

Great thanks is that collin cott? I sent him a message. I'll describe what I'm looking for a bit better: I'm looking to launch myself as a photographer, so I need a portfolio to present my pictures, I could go to a shop and buy a leather portfolio.. But I would like to have something different and more personal than that. Being from Norway and growing up with forest around I think wood is the right material. So I'm trying to find someone that can make me a portfolio of wood, Wood front and back, and leather to bind it together. So any suggestions are welcome! GT

I think it would be very delicate and probably not last very long with cupping and splitting but a good place to start would be a luthiers supplier for book matched guitar blanks . For the pages you could use paper backed veneer with the timber on one side and your pictures on the other . I can see it costing a few quid in materials and once done you will be scared to take it out incase you damage it . Are you still in Norway ? Ops , yes , Colin Cott is the man .

Thanks for responce! Haven't heard from Colin yet. I guess he's not as eager about my project as I am.. I'm based in London, have a motorbike so I'm able to travel a little bit around the country. (would probably go to inverness to get it right) I was thinking if I have wood in covers. Then in the book I have a support sheet in front then pictures printed on photo papers 20-40 sheets, and then a support sheet again, before the back cover, of wood. Have seen good support sheets in the leather portfolios i have seen, so they could be of different material than wood. I was also thinking that I could put leather around the edge of the wooden covers, it will look nice and be a little bit protected. Guess I would have to get a protective bag to transport it. Most people seem to be able to treat portfolios nice though.. Thanks Gunnar

colin is quite busy at this time, so he might take a day or two to get back to you. thinking about this the real problem is the size you want, since in my experience most portfolios are quite big, say A1/2 that would be quite heavy in wood even travelling by motor bike you could initially cover a plastic one with wood fablon type stuff, to get some idea of what you want and need. i feel that you could make a kind of torsion box construction using 3mm ply and say 1/2inch inner frames, but this would mean that the item would be at least 2-3 inches thick, then of course you have to figure out how to mount the photos. are you going to put them in those plastic folders, so in that case you need a mechanism to hang them from, and that would give you the minimum thickness of the whole folio. i actually wonder whether it is sensible to modify the design of a music stand so you could have the rear of the folio stand up and support the photos. know this is complicating things but you might as well go for broke ;D paul

Don't know if you have had any luck obtaining your book, but if not I may be able to help. I made a photo album for a customer a year or so back out of wood. If you want anymore details you can e-mail me at maltrout512@hotmail.com My workshop is near Petworth in West Sussex, so would not be too far for you to travel.
