I always found lighting a problem in the workshop, especially certain "dead" spots, despite lots of lights all round. The router table is in a "dead" spot and needed some light. Stand alone lights next to it were not a good solution and were always in the way. (surprising how long one can live with the problem, till one day it was knocked over) So some grey matter had to be stirred up and applied! ;D ;D ;D The solution A 12 volt spot light on a flexible arm, which is mounted to the fence, out the way of work being done. It moves with the fence all the time, ensuring consistent good light and visibility. A small box was made from scrap pine to accommodate the small 12v transformer. This is attached to the side of the fence. The flexible arm is bolted to the box with the small spot at the other end. The 220v has its own plug (not connected to the router) as the light is used when setting up the bits and adjusting the fence. Next light will be on the lathe! Time? ?

I've been looking to do this type of thing for my bandsaw and maybe router table when I get round to making that. This thread has got me looking for cheap lamps to sacrifice for parts and I've spotted these. One is £4.99 and the other is in the sale at £2.49 tinyurl.com/39koodBob

They perhaps look a little too trendy to use as they are but as source of a 20 watt transformer, a metal gooseneck(part rigid part flexi) and a bulb/reflector assembly. Argos are easy to buy from. Check stock & reserve on line, collect within 2-3days. If anyone wants further details then I can measure/photograph details. Bob

Nice idea Jaco,
I've just put an old angle-poise desk-lamp on my workbench and used one of the "natural daylight" bulbs in it. Great for illuminating the deficiencies in my hand-work!
Cheers,
Lee
