I'm after a replacement for my Axminster Extreme 4 silent air compressor. A while back a bit of cloth got caught in the fan blades at either end and bent the hell out of one of the fins (see here). I managed to bend it back but I think it damaged more than just the fan. It's been making a different and louder noise since the incident and the pressure shut off swich doesn't work. Its began leaking at the connection to the pressure switch, which I assume is why it doesn't switch itself off anymore, but unfortunately I can't seem to find a way to tighten it So... I'm after a 150l compressor, must be single phase and it's got to be quiet too... I was looking at charnwoods 'silent' compressor range but they only go up to 50l I thought about the possibility to buying their small single motor version and rigging it up to my existing receiver but I assume that such a small motor wouldn't be capable of filling a 90 litre tank without burning itself out? Anyway, over to you. Oh and by quiet I mean definately not more than 80dB.

have you looked at the sip range, mine is a bit old, but not too noisy since i don't have a meter can't give you the rating but works well, gives me 8 bar. paul

The quietest compressors around are the "Bambi" type, which are diaphragm pumps rather than reciprocating pumps: They are the type of compressors installed in bank vaults, etc. They are not cheap, however. I've seen these mounted 3-up on top of reservoirs so they can obviously work in tandem. I think they are limited to about 6 to 8 bar, though Scrit

does it need to be 150l ? what about a small hydrovane screw compressor ?
can you get them in single phase ?

does it need to be 150l ? what about a small hydrovane screw compressor ? can you get them in single phase ? I believe that you can in the smaller sizes but they are hardly what I'd call silent ;D The smallest one is the HV01 (4cfm), then the HV02 (8cfm) and then the HV04 (20cfm). At 5.5 HP that;s about the biggest single phase machine you'll get, but the HV02 models start at over £2.5k+VAT (list), so probably £1.5k +VAT discounted Davy, is putting the compressor outside inside a baffled enclosure an option? does it need to be 150l ? I've been doing fine with just 90l but as the quietest compressors don't move as much air I thought a larger receiver would make sense. Davy, is putting the compressor outside inside a baffled enclosure an option? Unfortunately not. Anywhere outside would just put it closer to the neighbours so unless it was very quiet to begin with, its going to have to stay inside. I did look at the clarke shhh range but I can't justify spending that much. Anyone know how 'industrial' the bambi compressor is? Would it be possible to connect the 24l compressor to my existing receiver and just have an on/off ' valve controlling whether the larger tank is being filled? That way I could use the 24l tank for small jobs and when I need the extra capacity I just open the valve and let it fill the 90l tank too? Would that work? Axminster are selling the 24l version for about £300 and according to the bambi site it says its max duty cycle is 50% and with FAD at 31l/min @ 8bar would it just burn out? why do you need 150ltrs of high pressure air ? im lucky that i have a 5 foot tall receiver with a twin pump on top came out of a garage . but i would never be able to use all that air. I regularly come close to emptying my 90l tank when I have a couple of things to spray at once and I try not to have the compressor kick in while the room is dusty/misty to prolong it's life. I also work from home and prefer to work at night so I like to be able to fill the tank at a reasonable hour for the neighbours and know I've got some capacity to use if I need to at night. If it was very quiet I could get away with 90/100l again but I'd prefer the extra capacity if it wasn't going to bump the price up too much.
