This one might be a little off-topic as it’s about a bit of DIY, so apologies for the unintended heresy, but I may find some help here.
I have a couple of double-glazed units that have become misted, so I want to replace them with new. Additionally, I want to replace an existing single glazed internal secondary door between the house and an enclosed porch. As there’s a temperature difference between the two areas, I intend to upgrade the glazing in this door from single to double units. Being a woodworker, I’ll probably make the door and fit it myself.
I know that double glazing is now covered by the building regulations, but does this explain why it’s difficult to buy basic units?
Does anyone know of standard size glazing unit suppliers in the Reading area?
Thanks in advance, but I’m running out of time and excuses and I can’t c0ck a deaf ‘un any longer to the increasing stream of suggestions about a nice new door…. .

I wasnt aware you could buy D/G units off the shelf . I have all mine made to measure buy a glazier . I,m sure if you try a local glazier he will be able to supply you with the units you need .

Magnets for one sell double glazing units off the shelf to fit their doors. They can be expensive unless you are trade though.
Like Jason I get mine from a local glazier, look in the yellow pages, you should find several suppliers. For doors you will need to specify toughened or laminated glass.

Thanks, there are standard aperture sizes in relation to door sizes and I was hoping that it wasn't the case that they weren’t available as a standard replacement unit off the shelf.
But that is one route that had occurred to me.

why not knock on the doors around the reading trading estates and see what is available. near me in wembley there are about 6 double glazing companies that have small factories, i am sure some of them sell just the units it must be more easy for them than installing too, although i guess some extra profit comes from installation. otherwise on the a4 from heathrow, is a large double glazing company on the left hand side going into london. actually it is not too far from jfc if he came through hounslow. they seem to have there windows full of units and seem able to supply only. it is before osterley station and house. paul

DG units are no longer a black art
your local glazier will make them or have them made up for you
it takes no more than a week (ordering to collection) for my local glazier

Surely pre made units are not alot cheaper than having them made and you have the added hassle of making the doors to the glass size and the overall opening size . I had to do that on this job ... The glass at the top was new but the stained glass and beveled glass in the doors where origional , total nightmare !!!

.
Thanks, Mark.
Why didn't I think of that?
I couldn't get any decent search results - probably using the wrong keywords.
I hope I can match your price down here in the over-priced South East.
Have some Karma for your help.
Best regards
