Woodworker - October 1954 advert (I probably have others, but the first that came to hand)
SPEED is money... An hour's work in five or six minutes! - that is the money-making Tarplaner - the electric jack plane.
Planes across the grain and end grain without splintering. Finger screw adjustment for "cut" 4" wide cutters. Supplied in metal carrying case. £38
Saves up to 30/- an hour.
Please write for free illustrated folder British Equipment Co. Ltd etc

.
£38 was a LOT of money in 1954. It was enough to emigrate on and many did. You could but a house for £500. 30 bob an hour was a LOT of money. My old man earned about £10 a week.
Well ahead of it’s time and probably well engineered to work well, but why is it that we’ve all gone back to using proper hand planes?
Does it still work? .

I'd think having it PAT tested before connecting it to the mains would be a good idea! Reminds me of the large Mafell portable planers.
