Have made a jewelery box out of cherry which hasn't gone too well, managed to drill through the end grain of a dovetail, when drilling out for quadrant hinge i have glued in a new piece, matching the end grain direction, but its still visible to the eye. So i am now treating this one now as a prototype & hopefully get the next 3 right, one for each of my daughters. Anyway getting to the point of my post Q. Is it possible to hide the mistake through finishing? before anyone sugests definitely not looking to paint it Going to try & post a pic tomorrow, once i get new camera managed to break that on the same day as well Simon

maybe not a reply you expect, but if you are near a newsagent that sells fine woodworking, check out the september 2008 issue, the latest one, they have a whole article about finishing cherry. an important thing to remember is that as the builder we all seem to think the repairs are more visible than they actually are. leave it to one side for a couple of days, and then see how it looks. cherry is notorious for being difficult to finish. paul

I have tried Sikkens Cetol BL Unitop which is water based and (I believe) can be sprayed if thinned. It is water based and a little strange to apply but works well on joinery Maybe if used as a base sealer and finished with wax it would be ok for cabinet work. cheers Brian

Unlikely! You are doing the right thing anyway - making some more. People are too reluctant to dump their mistakes IMHO and end up living with them. I'd drop it in the fire if I were you. All woodworkers should have a woodburning stove; not just for the offcuts but also for the failed projects ;D

Not really up for dropping it on the fire yet. Gonna go through the process of finishing it first, something i have never done with cherry. iron out any more potential problems.
But will get the issue you mentioned thanks.
