It just stops rather name spewing the blade out . Makes you jump though

A lot depends on the size of the bandsaw ;D
Also , if you bought a 1930's vintage belt driven 7ft tall monster without any guards over the wheels ( like me) then when they snap you do tend to jump a wee bit.

It's a lot scarier when they slip off one of the wheels but continue to make just enough contact to keep spinning.... I have a 1" saw kerf in the steel body of my bandsaw where that happened. The worst part was the noise, it was feckin' unbearable, although at least it drew my attention to the fact the fuse for the blade brake had failed - after taking about 30 seconds to stop screeching
