Pete Newton (Newt) kindly made me one of his fabulous brass scratch stocks recently. Apart from its intended use of making grooves for inlays, I found it great for grooving loose tenons to allow excess glue to escape. Here it is making some grooves in an oak loose tenon Cheers Paul

Nice one! I've usually resorted to sawing a couple of shallow kerfs on each side, but the scratch stock makes a much neater job. Looks like you could do all your tenon stock in one go before cross cutting to length too. Some nice brass to polish as well!! ;D Dave

Can you post some more pictures of the scratch stock? I fancy having a go at making one myself. Thanks

Or maybe we could commission/persuade Newt to make a batch?

Can you post some more pictures of the scratch stock? I fancy having a go at making one myself. Here you go, a couple of pics of the underside, which is curved and polished And here's one of the groove the fence slides along If you have a go at making one, there are a couple of modifications you might like to consider. First, if you drill and tap two holes, one at each end of the fence, you could insert a couple of bolts and smooth over the heads. It would then follow a curve. Second, I have the idea of using beading cutters from combination planes in it to make c*ck beads. This would be easier with an extension to the fence (which is easily added) so that it could slide slightly under the cutter. Nick, on the question of Newt making a batch, you could always ask him but he's made quite a few and I guess he's probably sick of making them by now (plus they take time when made to this standard). Cheers Paul PS The forum obviously thinks c*ck beads are rude ;D
