Hi and welcome to the forum hardwoodlover ;D
Why not have a lifting lid like an old school desk in the cente section which lifts an underlying shelf up to desk surface level housing the laptop so that the desk has a flat overall surface in either configuration.
I think pull-out solutions that make you move your chair are less attractive or practical.
Design of the desk - up to you ;D
cheers

Hi and welcome to the forum. I think you need to ask yourself whether this is a problem that needs solving. The main selling point of the laptop is that it is highly portable and fairly small and storing it ready to use underneath a desk may not be that practical. You will also have to think of the electrics and charging etc which will get in the way of any flip up devices etc . For your design to work efficiently it needs to be simple and hassle free to put the laptop away or get it ready for use when needed. The design could be a simple drawer or shelf. You could make the desk top a shallow hollow box and slide the laptop in from the front. Or the laptop could be stored vertically maybe in the legs somehow.

I'd suggest: first take a look at how others have solved the same or similar problem. Viking, or other office suppliers? This isn't a suggestion that you should cheat by copying but is the quickest way to get up to speed with the problem. It's common sense basic research ;D cheers Jacob

Make a table to your own design leaving a gap in the front to accommodate a drawer which will be wide enough for your laptop, then purchase some slides which will sit under the drawer for opening( B&Q sell them) and support, you can also purchase a type which allow you to put a drawer front on the sliding shelf and this then flaps down. If you can't find them PM me I think we have some knocking about.
Good Luck Dom

Hey Ilovehardwood, Just a thought to throw into the mix, what about looking at someway of 'hanging' whatever you use to carry your laptop around in, on the desk....think of a back pack hooked onto the back of a chair fr'example; but hooked or held somehow onto the desk instead, that way when the laptop is not being used it can be put back into its bag/carrycase for next time you are on the move...jsut a thought

Hi ilovehardwood, I wonder if you design idea has a flaw, in that once you get your laptop out you are unlikely to put it away again until the end of the day - and maybe not even then. Why not design the desk to have the laptop permantly on the top, with a swing out/pull out surface for the odd occasion when you want some extra space on which to write? Cheers Paul

Just scratch the odd message on the wall if you really need to write something, or tap on the pipes.
