While flicking through the channels on TV, caught one of Nick Knowles team, on DIY SOS, showing the householder how to sharpen a chisel. Knowles appeared and said," Oh great, you're using prime time TV to show the audience how to sharpen a bloody chisel, if I was one of them I'd be thinking, 'Ooh, I'll cancel the weekend away in Devon with my fabulous girlfriend to watch the rest of this programme'. Suddenly I like Nick Knowles

SWMBO and I enjoy watching DIY SOS. I know there is a lot of mucking around but it is an entertainment program and an awful lot of their projects are to help people that have had life dump on them from a great height.
As for MDF - they use it sometimes, but there have been many occasions when they have made solid oak or ash kitchens and other pieces of furniture.
The thing is they seem nice guys - good British workmen doing a professional job and proud of what they do. Don't confuse what this program is about with programs like 60 Minute Makeover or Changing rooms.
Do I now duck behind the parapet and wait for the flack?

I like it. Me and Mrs Smudge often pause for a mid-day Horlicks and watch Nick and his team unscrew another DIY bodge. In the early series there was a proper chippie (Bob Grose) who has a business doing handmade kitchens and stuff. HereSome of the stuff they do is good - and they get the basics right. Never use MDF, only 'tree wood'. The designers have been a pretty naff bunch, though.

The designers have been a pretty naff bunch, though. That's a pre-requisite isn't it for employment as 'designer' on one of these programs isn't it, Smudge? ;D

I agree with Dick, DIY SOS is one of the better, probably the best show of it's kind on the telly at the moment and way better than 'Changing Rooms' and that insufferable tw*t with the floppy hair and big shirts. What NK and the lads do is a genuinely decent job on some complete hashes, or in many cases where folk have fallen on really hard times (often through some medical mishap not of their making) and can see no way out of a very deep, dark hole. Good stuff...I liked the girlie designer with the curly blond locks ;D - Rob

I've never heard of him (don't watch much telly) but despite his unhealthy addiction to trellissing there is some good stuff in there. I like the ash kitchen.
