Hi all, Ive been asked to make an external front door similar to this, Made in oak So im thinking, 2" rails and stiles 2"x6" stiles 2"x6" top rail 2"x12" bottom rail Does this sound about right ? im a bit concerned about movement, and would have prefered a middle rail, but its not wanted. Glass ?? double glazed unit or single pane ? toughened of course. Any thoughts/ advise appreciated. Cheers, Gazza.

2 x 6 and 2 x 12 sounds a bit heavy to me, I would go for 2x5 and 2x10 haunched, wedged and mortice and tenon joinery should keep it in check. as for glass, will have to be a DG unit, have a look at the U values thread for whick thickness though.

I would also go with 5inch Rails and 10inch Bottom Rail with traditional joinery. If you are making the frame as well you could go for 2 1/2 inch timber to allow more rebate for the double glazing or stay with 2inch and use a gas filled unit.
I have done a few doors like this recently mainly french door sets. I have started using laminated european oak for these as it comes in ready dimensioned with no Knots or shakes and is stable and is just as cheap as buying sawn timber. You can only see the laminations from the side. The sizes of this is Rails 120X48 or 120X63 with Bottom Rails 200X48 or 200X63. You can also get frame sections as well.

Hi Paul I get the laminated oak from Fitchett and Woolacott in Nottingham. They get it from Brooks Bros who bought them out a couple of years ago. I imagine it is the same stuff you get from Timbnet. Info here www.brookstimber.co.uk/laminated.htmTo make a door similar to the one in the thread will cost about £90+ vat in materials for the laminated oak in 48mm finished size. I calculated that about 2 cubft is needed to make the door including wastage so it costs about £45 a cubft. Jon
