I think I might have acquired a willow tree - or at least, I used to have a willow tree but my French neighbour has cut it down for me. I think (it wasn't made clear) that he is going to leave it for me.
Now, what can I use it for? I'm not a turner, but I have a woodburning stove. I don't need any cricket bats. I can't hink of any traditional uses.
I wouldn't mind the 4 or 5 stock cherries that he cut down earlier - good straight stuff. All now tagged for the local timberyard.

Sorry Dick, burn it Fair enough - it's free! Should last a couple of months, save me buying any firewood next year. Is it carveable?

That's cool. I can take big logs and whittle them down to size.
Well, that's evenings between December and June sorted...

Just don't leave what you think is dead twigs stuck in the ground, or you'll have another willow tree in no time.
Don't cricket bats require a certain type of willow? There's probably a Latin name for it! Jack

I think he left the willow for you because he couldnt be bothered its crummy firewood, isnt very durable externally. I'd be inclined to try a chainsaw carving. Or practise riving it up. Or hire a chipper and make it into mulch. I was offered a huge willow tree for free for the exact same reason (pretty useless species)

Willow burns very well if dry. Had a load once. Uses: best bits for cricket bats, then artificial limbs, toys, sieve frames, flower trugs, fruit baskets, cart and barrow bottoms, boxes and crates. It sez ere.

Great! Nice to see old crafts - even if now a tourist attraction. Thanks for that, I'll give it a try...

More use for willow! It's from the bodgers site which is a mine of interesting info Thanks for the link Mr G - another couple of hours wasted well spent! I now know that my adze (bought secondhand for a tenner many years ago) is actually worth a small fortune.
