Hello folks, I couldn't find a specific place to put an introductory thread. So I am putting it here. I have been working with wood since 1950, if I can include the lessons from school; which is where I started. I worked in the trade as a joiner, at an 'up-market' builders for a while; up-market meant we made such things as the more salubrious shop-fronts, fittings for Public Buildings and exotic work for High Street Banks. (Back in the day, when Banks had real money and their greed wasn't so obvious. Eventually I went 'work-about' and did all sorts of 'wooding'. But habits die hard, and I now use what skills I might have as a hobby, and sometimes to give the pension a boost. I am sorting out my workshop a bit, and I have finally got around to making a proper cabinetmaking bench with a tail-vice maybe. Not like the benches where I started work. Those were the same as the school benches I started on. So that's my present project although, so far, I just decided on the timber I want to use. (Ash) That's about it for now. Looking forward to learning and chatting about woodwork. Jack

Thanks folks, As long as you don't mind a woodworking Genius among you; like me. Yeah.. ok! ;D I don't believe in sharpening tools it takes up time. Like, my planer's got nicks in the blade, but its good for making veneer grounds. I think I ought to learn to change the blades! In other words, I struggle at times so I might need advice making furniture. See, I made far too many gates and window frames. Somebody said it don't make much difference. Joints is joints. But its an whole new world I tell you! Jack

Hi Jack, welcome, perhaps your first question should be, " How do I sharpen my blades ?" ;D

Aw no Dom. I let them as know how, do things like that. I know they are balanced then and won't take chunks out of my in-feed table! Or out of me! I know the feller at the local sawmill, who maintains the machines. He comes along, fits my spare blades and takes the blunt set off to be ground. Costs me a few pints worth of munnie, that's all. Haven't seen him for month or so. I been having plastic surgery to make myself look older, so I can get into the 'flicks' to see the new James Bond film. ;D In other words, I have neglected my workshop for reasons that mystify even me! Cheers Jack
