Has anyone tried Sadolin Superdec opaque joinery coatings? My local supplier has stopped selling sikkens and offered this as an alternative.

I also like Sadolin stuff. I use a lot of Sadolin Classic which soaks into the wood and doesn't leave a surface film to peel off. Not used Superdec but if Sadolin make it, then it's probably good. Cheers Paul

I have recently just used it on a summerhouse i have just finished building. Next time i do one i am going to build it in the summer not winter as working outside for the last couple of weeks hasnt been fun.
It has go on well and is easy to apply. The only problem is that i made one of the windows from douglas fir as i had some lying around and the resin has bled through the finish. This hasnt happened on the other windows which are made from u/s redwood. Its not too much of a problem as i am going to give it all a final coat in the spring

I used to use Sandolin on my window and door frames but for the last 6 years switched to Sikkens products (Cetol HLS followed by Cetol Filter 7). On the south facing side, the Sadolin system only lasted a couple of years but the Sikkens lasts about 4. On the north side no problems - seems to last forever?

On the south facing side, the Sadolin system only lasted a couple of years but the Sikkens lasts about 4. On the north side no problems - seems to last forever? In practice, there's no ideal timber preservative (except creosote but that stinks so can't be used on things like windows and doors), so I think the best option is to go for the one that works well and gives least hassle when you have to re-do it. Some give a surface film which peels off. That means lots of work preparing the surface for re-application. Why I like Sadolin Classic is that it gives minimum surface film so requires less work when re-applying. I don't know how it compares with Sikkens because I've never used it. Like yours, Rod, my front door is well protected from the weather and I've only treated it once in about 18 years. The back door gets all the weather so I normally do it about once every two years (usually before it needs it). Cheers Paul
