Carpentry and Joinery , book one by R.Bayliss covers the basic joints and operations but to be honest a copy of the regs and a staircase jig is all you need .

There were two Staircase books in the last Craftsman Book Club Catalogue. One from Taunton Press, but I don't know much about either. I know I should read more Book Club

All you need to do is work out your rise and mark it onto a rod . From thet you can mark out where your treads are going to go . You going is whatever the area is you need to fit it into so i guess your restricted by that and the regulations 220mm last time i made a staircase . The winders have to be 50mm at the newel post and 220mm or your going in the centre of the winders . Once you have your rod made you can work out where your staircase is going and mark it out to find out the angle .

Now if you just put all that in a book - I'd carry it with me, study it in detail, memorize it. . . . and them just maybe have a go - sometime

Wonder if anyone can check my calculations?
Finished floor to finished floor rise = 2371mm.
11 risers of 215.5 will give me the rise I need and be within the 220mm limit set by BRegs.
A going of 220 is a little on the tight side and a tad over the 42 degrees but let's go with it for now.
Top flight will have 5 treads so this means that the total go of this flight is 1100mm.
Three winders...the actual tread width is 755mm excluding stringers.
Which leaves me with the bottom flight with a total go of 660mm.
Question re winders...the minimum width at the newel post is 50mm. Doesn't this mean that I need a newel post the size of a telegraph pole? Can't see how you go about making the winder to newel post joint.

Have you been peeking in my post ? Excellent recommendation, thanks ...I stumbled across this and ordered a secondhand copy. Having skimmed through it will probably bottle out due to the winders...

Not got my thinking head on at the moment but the 220mm tread is the min going and 220mm is the max rise . The 50mm winder fits into a 95mm x 95mm . You can make the going of each tread what you like as long as they are all the same and not over 850mm i think .....

P.S the R. Bayliss book says min 850mm width for domestic staircases but i have asked a few councils over the years and they have all said there is no min width . Might be best to ask your local D.S . Having said that if that is the room you have existing then they wont make you move a wall but if you are trying to make space by putting a wall there they may have something to say .
