Just lifted this from over there as I have just been doing it - plugging holes with putty that is. BrianD is asking if it's a good idea. Yes it's excellent stuff and dead cheap. Small piece in the hand and plug dozens of holes in minutes- press it in with your thumb or with a palette knife of some sort. Leave it proud and sand off after a day or so. You can paint as soon as it's a bit dry, doesn't have to be hard. Yes will do for mdf but prime first or the oil will slightly expand the mdf around the hole and be difficult to level off and slow to dry

Or a set of these and you can do a few sizes. You dont need a piller drill to use the straight ones.

Cheers Paul I've been using it for years and it never drops out. Also I've been fiddling with old joinery for years and old putty under paint is rock hard and permanent. It's yer old dilemma of modern materials versus trad materials. Modern stuff dries faster - paint, fillers, everything, but is obsolescent. Old stuff is still there 100 years later.

Whats wrong with counter boring and fitting an MDF plug Too much trouble. Quick dab of putty will take a fraction of the time. You can fit out a whole room with skirtings, architraves etc and fill all the nail/screw holes in a couple of minutes, with putty, at a cost of a few pennies. Everybody seems to prefer the expensive, complicated, high-tech, gadget based approach to simple problems. I blame the magazines!
